A. K. Hangal

Indian actor (1915-2012)

A tailor, a trade unionist and a member of the Indian People's Theatre Association who was jailed in Karachi for his part in the independence movement and came to Bombay after Partition. He did not start in films until he was fifty.

He then played some two hundred of them, almost always the decent older man. The blind Rahim Chacha in Sholay, burying his son, has the line that survives everything else in the scene - 'itna sannata kyun hai bhai' - and he delivers it without raising his voice. Namak Haraam, Bawarchi, Shaukeen. He worked into his nineties.
