Ajit
1922–1998
Ajit - Hamid Ali Khan - played heroes for a decade before finding the role that made him permanent: the suave, amused crime boss who never raises his voice. Teja in Zanjeer is the template, and the flat drawl he used became one of the most imitated voices in India.
He had been a leading man in the 1950s, in Nastik and Baradari, and turned to villainy in middle age when the parts stopped. The second career was much larger than the first, and the catchphrases attached to it - mostly invented afterwards by mimics rather than spoken in any film - are still in circulation.
