Alka Yagnik
Indian playback singer
Fifteen recordings here, and they are all from one stretch: Nastik in 1983, then Daata, Jaadugar, Izzatdaar, Damini and Karan Arjun between 1989 and 1995.
That is the shape of her career in miniature. She arrives at the very end of the period this catalogue is strongest in, as the generation before her is finishing, and then becomes the default female voice of Hindi film music for twenty years - a run long enough that most people under fifty in India have heard her more often than they have heard any singer alive.
Her first recordings here are from the year she was seventeen. She had sung on All India Radio in Calcutta from the age of six.
Damini, in 1993, is the one worth starting with. It is a film about a woman who witnesses a rape in her husband's household and will not be talked out of saying so, and the songs have to carry something other than romance, which is not what she is usually asked for.
