Amitabh Bachchan
Indian film actor (born 1942)
The angry young man, and the figure around whom Hindi cinema reorganised itself for fifteen years. After a dozen films that went nowhere, Zanjeer in 1973 gave him a register nobody had used - quiet, contained, and about to go off - and Deewaar and Sholay in 1975 made it the industry's default hero.
Jai is the restrained half of Sholay, and Bachchan was not yet the star he became within months of its release. He has since won four National Awards across five decades, taken the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2018, and had a second career in middle age - Black, Paa, Piku - that is arguably better work than the first.
