Amjad Khan

Indian actor (1940-1992)

The son of the character actor Jayant, and the man who made the most quoted villain in Indian cinema out of about fifteen minutes of screen time. He prepared for Gabbar Singh by reading Abhishapta Chambal, an account of the real dacoits of the ravines, and nearly lost the role after early rushes went badly.

What he found was a villain who is funny - who talks to his men like a bored manager and kills them in the same tone - and that combination had not been done. He played a very different register as Wajid Ali Shah in Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khilari, and worked steadily in Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Laawaris and Yaarana until a road accident and its aftermath shortened his career. He died at fifty-one.
