Amrish Puri

1932–2005

Amrish Puri failed a screen test at twenty-two, took a job with the Employees' State Insurance Corporation, and acted on the Bombay stage for Satyadev Dubey and Girish Karnad for two decades before films would have him. He was forty before he became a villain and sixty before he became the most famous one.

Mogambo in Mr. India is the role, but Spielberg's Temple of Doom took him abroad and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge made him a father instead. He was Madan Puri's younger brother, which means one family supplied Hindi cinema's antagonists across half a century.
