Anita Guha
Indian actress (1932-2007)
Anita Guha worked across Bengali and Hindi cinema but is remembered above all for devotional films, where she played goddesses with a stillness the genre rarely got: Sita in Sampoorna Ramayana (1961), and Parvati in Jai Santoshi Maa (1975), a low-budget film that became one of the largest box-office successes of its decade.
Jai Santoshi Maa (1975) is the film that outran everything else she did. Made on almost no money and released the same year as Sholay, it became one of the largest earners of the decade by word of mouth alone - audiences took off their shoes in cinemas and threw coins at the screen, and a goddess with little prior following acquired a nationwide one. Guha had already played Sita in Sampoorna Ramayana (1961); she was the face the genre reached for, and she played divinity quietly, which is harder than it looks.
