Asha Bhosle
Indian playback singer (1933-2026)
Lata Mangeshkar's younger sister, and a singer who built an entirely separate career out of everything her sister did not do - the cabaret number, the ghazal, the song with an edge to it. She took 'Reshmi Ujala Hai Makhmali Andhera' here. Across seven decades she recorded more than twelve thousand songs in a dozen languages, took the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001 and two Grammy nominations, and her range across genres is probably unmatched in the industry. She died in Mumbai in April 2026, aged 92.
The range is the achievement. She sang Umrao Jaan's ghazals and Teesri Manzil's rock numbers and Caravan's cabaret within a few years of each other, took two Grammy nominations and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001, and in the 1990s - well past the age at which playback singers normally stop - had a second career with R. D. Burman and then with a generation of composers born after her first hits. More than twelve thousand recorded songs across a dozen languages.
