Asha Parekh

1942–

Asha Parekh trained as a classical dancer and was rejected by Vijay Bhatt at sixteen for not being star material; he cast her two months later. She carried films through the 1960s - Teesri Manzil, Kati Patang, Caravan, Do Badan - and was one of the few actresses of the period who could open a picture alone.

She later chaired the Central Board of Film Certification, ran a hospital, and directed for television. She was given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2020.
