Asit Sen
Indian actor and comedian (1917-1993)
A comedian with a slow, deliberate, faintly mournful delivery that made him instantly recognisable across four decades, from the 1950s to the 1980s - Aradhana, Anand, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Bombay to Goa. He is regularly confused with the DIRECTOR Asit Sen (1922-2001), who made Khamoshi, Mamta and Safar. They are two different men.
His comedy was built almost entirely out of tempo. He delivered lines at roughly half the speed of everyone else on screen, with a lugubrious expression that never acknowledged the joke, and the gap between his pace and the scene's was the whole act - unrepeatable, and instantly recognisable from one line. He worked steadily from the 1950s to the 1980s. He is not the Asit Sen who directed Khamoshi and Mamta; they are two men who shared a name and an industry.
