Asrani

Indian actor and comedian (1941-2025)

Trained at the Film and Television Institute and taught there afterwards, which is not the usual route into broad comedy. Asrani worked in some three hundred and fifty films and was the reliable comic presence of the 1970s - Chupke Chupke, Bawarchi, Abhimaan.

The jailor in Sholay is a cameo and a famous one: a tiny man with a Chaplin moustache announcing that he is a British-trained officer to a yard of prisoners who are plainly not listening. The joke is entirely in the self-importance, and it is held for exactly as long as it works.
