B. R. Ishara made low-budget films about sex and class at a time when neither was discussed on screen, and the censors spent a decade arguing with him.

Chetna in 1970 was the one that broke through - made for almost nothing, about a prostitute offered respectability - and he went on making films in the same register, Milap, Charitra, Kaagaz Ki Nao, long after the market for them had closed.
