Balraj Sahni
1913–1973
Balraj Sahni taught at Tagore's Shantiniketan, worked for the BBC Hindi service in wartime London, and came back to join the Indian People's Theatre Association, where the politics that got him jailed were formed. He acted as though acting were ordinary work, which almost nobody else did.
Do Bigha Zamin (1953) is the performance - a Bengali farmer pulling a rickshaw in Calcutta, prepared by living among rickshaw-pullers - and Garam Hawa (1973), about a Muslim family choosing not to leave for Pakistan, is the other. He died days after finishing its dubbing. Waqt is in between, and is him in a commercial register.
