Charlie

Comedian; took his name from Chaplin (1911-1983)

Noor Mohammed Memon was born in Ranavav, near Porbandar, in 1911, and took the screen name Charlie because he admired Charlie Chaplin - which tells you both what he did and how he was billed, since the film's own cast card calls him simply Charlie. He plays Seth Badriprasad, the theatre owner who loses his son at the Kumbh Mela, which is the event the whole plot turns on. He moved to Pakistan after partition and died in 1983, a day before his seventy-second birthday.
