Dev Anand
1923–2011
Dev Anand came to Bombay with a degree in English literature and a job in a military censor's office, and became the third of the great trio of the 1950s alongside Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. His style - the tilted head, the rapid speech, the scarf - was imitated for forty years and parodied for sixty.
With his brothers Chetan and Vijay he founded Navketan Films, which made Taxi Driver, Kala Pani, Guide and Jewel Thief. Guide (1965) is the one that justifies the career: a man who becomes a holy man by accident and cannot escape it. He directed and starred into his eighties and never stopped making films, including a long run of them nobody watched.
