Deven Verma

1937–2014

Deven Verma played comedy without mugging, which made him Hrishikesh Mukherjee's and Gulzar's comedian of choice at a time when the alternative was broad. Three Filmfare awards for supporting actor, all in that register.

Angoor, in which he plays both halves of one of two pairs of twins, is the performance to see. He also produced and directed, and retired fairly early, saying the parts had stopped being written.
