Dharmendra

Indian actor and politician (1935-2025)

For two decades the most physically convincing leading man in Hindi cinema, and one of the few who was just as good being funny. Dharmendra broke through with Phool Aur Patthar in 1966 and worked almost without pause for forty years - well over two hundred films - moving between the action pictures that made his name and comedies like Chupke Chupke, where the joke is how seriously he plays it.

Veeru in Sholay is the part that fixed him in the public mind: the water tank, the drunk scene, the friendship with Jai that the film is really about. His own favourite of his films was Satyakam, which almost nobody saw. He was given the Padma Bhushan in 2012 and served a term in the Lok Sabha.
