G. P. Sippy
Indian film producer and director (1914-2007)
Gopaldas Parmanand Sipahimalani came to Bombay from Sindh after Partition and tried construction and carpets before films. He produced for four decades under the Sippy Films banner and was for a long stretch president of the Film and Television Producers Guild of India.
Sholay was his gamble: the most expensive Indian film made to that point, shot over two and a half years, directed by his own son, and dismissed on release. He held his nerve through the first weeks of poor returns, which is the part of the story usually left out.
