Geeta Dutt
Indian playback singer (1930–1972)
Three recordings here under her own name, and a fourth presence that is not a credit at all.
In Kala Bazar, in 1960, the black-market scenes were shot at the actual premiere of Mother India, with the real stars arriving as themselves - and she is one of them, walking in, playing Geeta Dutt. She also sings on the film: Na Main Dhan Chahoon with Sudha Malhotra, and Rimjhim Ke Tarane with Mohammed Rafi, in Pahadi.
She was the voice of the late forties and the fifties - Baazi, Jaal, Aar Paar, Mr. & Mrs. 55, Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool - and she married Guru Dutt in 1953, which is the fact that organises everything written about her since. Kaagaz Ke Phool, which is here, is the film about a director whose career collapses; it collapsed his.
What is worth saying about the singing rather than the marriage is that she could do two completely different things. The Bengali-inflected devotional register - Na Main Dhan Chahoon is exactly that - and the nightclub number, where she is louder, flatter and funnier than anybody else was willing to be.
She died at forty-one, outliving her husband by eight years.
