Girish Karnad

1938–2019

Girish Karnad wrote plays that made Kannada a language of the modern Indian stage - Tughlaq, Hayavadana, Nagamandala - and then acted in and directed films because the theatre did not pay.

Samskara, Manthan, Nishaant, Swami, Iqbal, and the Hindi television Malgudi Days. He ran the Film and Television Institute and the Sangeet Natak Akademi, won the Jnanpith in 1998, and spent his last years saying unpopular things in public on purpose.
