Gulshan Nanda

Indian novelist and screenwriter (1929-1985)

The best-selling Hindi novelist of his generation, and the rare writer whose books the film industry queued up to buy. Kati Patang, Khilona, Daag, Neel Kamal, Kaajal and Patthar Ke Sanam are all adaptations of his novels; Sharmilee he wrote for the screen directly. His popular melodramas - inheritances, mistaken identity, women with secrets - gave Hindi cinema a decade of plots. He belongs as much on a shelf of books as on a shelf of films.

At his peak his novels sold in the hundreds of thousands and he was reportedly the best-paid writer in the Hindi film industry, which is a sentence that has been true of almost nobody else. The machinery was consistent: a secret, a substitution, a woman carrying something she cannot say, and a reversal in the last reel. Critics were dismissive and readers were not. Because the books came first, he sits on a shelf of novels with the films hanging off them, rather than the other way round.
