Gulzar
1936–
Sampooran Singh Kalra writes under the name Gulzar and has done almost everything a film can be written for - lyrics, dialogue, screenplay, direction - while publishing poetry in Urdu that has nothing to do with cinema at all. He began as a car mechanic in Bombay, writing on the side.
Bimal Roy gave him his first song. He directed Aandhi, Mausam, Ijaazat and Maachis, and has won more Filmfare awards for lyrics than anyone. The Academy Award for Jai Ho in 2009 made him briefly famous abroad for the least representative thing he has written.
