Hasrat Jaipuri

Indian poet and lyricist (1922–1999)

Fifteen songs here, and the best of them is a bus conductor's.

He was working as a bus conductor in Bombay for eleven rupees a week, writing Urdu verse, when Prithviraj Kapoor heard him at a mushaira and mentioned him to Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor took him on for Barsaat, and he spent the next forty years writing for Shankar-Jaikishan.

In this catalogue he is all over the Shankar-Jaikishan films: Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein in Brahmachari, which is in Shivaranjani and won Mohammed Rafi the Filmfare; Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche in the same film, which began as a tune rejected for another picture and was rescued by Shammi Kapoor; Is Rang Badalti Duniya Mein and Tumne Pukara in Rajkumar; Jhanan Jhanan Jhanan in Aah; and half the songs in Junglee, which he split with Shailendra.

He and Shailendra were the two lyricists Shankar-Jaikishan worked with for most of their career, and the division is usually clean enough to hear: Shailendra the plainer and more political, Jaipuri the romantic.

He was nominated for the Filmfare for Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein and lost to Shailendra, for a song in the same film.
