Helen

Indian actress and dancer (born 1938)

Born in Burma to an Anglo-Burmese family who walked to India during the war, Helen Richardson became the dancer around whom an entire Hindi film convention was built. For twenty years, if a film had a cabaret number, it had her in it.

Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu from Howrah Bridge, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja from Caravan, Yeh Mera Dil from Don - songs that outlived their films. She was given the Padma Shri in 2009. The convention she defined has largely disappeared, which makes the footage the only record of it.
