Hema Malini
Indian actress, dancer and politician (born 1948)
A trained Bharatanatyam dancer who was once rejected as not photogenic enough, and then spent the 1970s as the most bankable actress in Hindi cinema - the Dream Girl, a title that came from a film and stuck for fifty years.
Basanti talks more than anyone else in Sholay and is the only character who talks her way out of trouble. Seeta Aur Geeta had already shown she could carry a double role and a comedy; Satte Pe Satta and Baghban followed. She later directed, ran a dance company, and has served in both houses of the Indian parliament.
