Hemant Kumar

1920–1989

Hemanta Mukhopadhyay sang in Bengali as Hemanta and in Hindi as Hemant Kumar, and composed in both, and the voice - low, unhurried, almost spoken - is one of the few in Indian music that nobody has successfully imitated.

He composed Nagin, Bees Saal Baad, Khamoshi and Kohraa, and sang Hai Apna Dil To Awara and Ya Dil Ki Suno. Lata Mangeshkar said his voice sounded like a priest singing from a temple. He produced films too, under Hemant Bela and Geetanjali.
