Hrishikesh Mukherjee
1922–2006
Hrishikesh Mukherjee edited for Bimal Roy before directing, and he never stopped editing - he cut most of his own films. He made around forty, almost all of them domestic, unhurried and funny, in an industry that was going the other way.
Anand, Chupke Chupke, Bawarchi, Golmaal, Abhimaan, Mili, Namak Haraam. He is the director people mean by 'middle cinema' - neither the art film nor the spectacle - and the one whose films are most often described as something to put on when you are unwell.
