Iftekhar
Indian actor (1920-1995)
If a Hindi film of the 1960s or 70s has a police commissioner in it, the odds are good that Iftekhar is playing him. He appeared in several hundred films as the figure of calm institutional authority, a type he owned so completely that casting him was a form of shorthand.
He began as a singer and shifted to acting, and ended up so completely identified with one kind of part - the senior police officer, the commissioner, the man behind the desk - that his arrival in a frame told the audience what sort of scene it was about to watch. He played it straight for forty years and across several hundred films, in an industry that gave almost no other actor that much work for that long.
