Jaywant Pathare

Seventeen films here, and the Hrishikesh Mukherjee canon is most of them.

Seventeen films in this catalogue, and once they are listed in order the shape is unmistakable.

Anari in 1959. Chhaya in 1961. Anupama in 1966. Anand, Buddha Mil Gaya and Guddi in 1971. Bawarchi in 1972. Abhimaan and Namak Haraam in 1973. Chupke Chupke and Mili in 1975. Alaap in 1977. Jurmana and Gol Maal in 1979. Khubsoorat in 1980. Bemisal in 1982.

Every one of those is Hrishikesh Mukherjee's, and they are very nearly all of Hrishikesh Mukherjee that this catalogue holds. The man who shot them has not had a page here until now, while the director has had three versions of one.

That is worth stating plainly, because the look of those films is a real thing and it is his. They are interiors, mostly: households, offices, hospital rooms, a rented flat. They are lit so that nothing announces itself, which is much harder than lighting something that does. Anand is a film about a dying man that is not shot like one.

The earliest film here is older than any of that - Aah, from 1953, which is Raj Kapoor's.
