Kishore Kumar
Indian singer, actor and composer (1929-1987)
Untrained, uncontainable, and for twenty years the most recognisable male voice in Hindi cinema. Kishore Kumar began as a comic actor and backed into playback singing, bringing a yodel, a sense of mischief and an ability to act a lyric rather than merely sing it. He sings four of Sharmilee's seven tracks, including both the title song and the male version of 'Khilte Hain Gul Yahan'.
He took eight Filmfare awards for male playback singing, more than anyone had at the time, with no formal training in music whatsoever - he could not read a score and learned songs by ear. He also acted, directed, composed and produced, and his films are genuinely strange. During the Emergency his songs were banned from All India Radio after he declined to sing at a government rally, which is a fair summary of how he conducted himself.
