Lata Mangeshkar
Indian playback singer (1929-2022)
The defining voice of Hindi film music for half a century, and one of the most recorded singers who has ever lived. Lata Mangeshkar sings three of Sharmilee's tracks, among them 'Megha Chhaye Aadhi Raat' and the female setting of 'Khilte Hain Gul Yahan' - recorded as a separate solo rather than a duet, which is why two quite different songs share one title. Bharat Ratna, 2001.
She took the Bharat Ratna in 2001, India's highest civilian honour and one almost never given to a performer, after the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 and three National Film Awards. She recorded in more than thirty languages across seven decades. The voice itself - very high, very clean, almost without vibrato - became the sound a Hindi film heroine was expected to have, to the point where it is hard now to hear how radical a choice it originally was.
