Naqsh Lyallpuri

Urdu poet whose film songs read like ghazals · 1928–2017

Naqsh Lyallpuri was born Jaswant Rai Sharma on 24 February 1928 in Lyallpur, now Faisalabad in Pakistan, and moved to India after Partition. An Urdu poet at heart, he brought ghazal-like refinement to film lyrics over more than four decades. His best-remembered song is 'Rasm-e-Ulfat Ko Nibhayen' from Dil Ki Raahen (1973), and his film work includes Chetna (1970) and Tumhare Liye (1978).

For Rocky Mera Naam (1973), composed by Sapan-Jagmohan, he wrote the songs, among them Mohammed Rafi's 'Dil Kabhi Tumne Diya Tha' and 'So Ja Sanam'. Connoisseurs prized him, though big commercial success mostly passed him by. He died in Mumbai on 22 January 2017.
