Naushad

Naushad spent a year arguing with a producer about whether a hundred-piece orchestra was necessary, got it, and changed what Hindi film music was allowed to cost. He brought raga-based composition into popular film and made it sell.

Baiju Bawra, Mughal-e-Azam, Mother India, Ganga Jamuna, Pakeezah's contemporaries. Baiju Bawra is built almost entirely on classical ragas and was a commercial hit, which is the thing that was supposed to be impossible. He was given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1981.
