Nazir Hussain
Indian actor and screenwriter (1922-1987)
For thirty years Nazir Hussain was the father, the uncle, the decent elder of Hindi cinema - Do Bigha Zamin (1953), Yahudi (1958), Ram Aur Shyam (1967), dozens more. Less widely known is that he was a founder of an entire cinema: he wrote and starred in Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo (1963), generally regarded as the first Bhojpuri feature film.
He is the father of Hindi cinema's golden age in the plainest sense - he played it several hundred times, and gave it a decency that was never sentimental. The achievement that outlasts the typecasting is in another language entirely: he wrote and starred in Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo (1963), which is generally taken to be the first Bhojpuri feature film, and in doing so helped start a film industry that did not exist before it.
