Neeraj
Indian poet and lyricist (1925-2018)
Gopaldas Saxena, who wrote as Neeraj, was a Hindi poet of the mushaira circuit who spent a few years writing for films and left a disproportionate mark on them. His collaboration with S. D. Burman produced the whole of Sharmilee's soundtrack, and 'Khilte Hain Gul Yahan' and 'Megha Chhaye Aadhi Raat' carry the register he brought from the stage - plain Hindi, unhurried, more interested in an image than a rhyme. He returned to poetry, and was awarded the Padma Bhushan.
He won the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist three years running - for 'Kaal ka pahiya' from Chanda Aur Bijli, 'Bas yahi apradh' from Pehchaan and 'Ae bhai zara dekh ke chalo' from Mera Naam Joker - which almost nobody has done, and then left the industry and went back to the mushaira stage, which almost nobody has done either. India gave him the Padma Shri in 1991 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007. His film lyrics read like his poetry because he never learned to write them any other way: plain Hindi, an image rather than a rhyme, and no hurry at all.
