Nirupa Roy
1930–2004
Nirupa Roy began in Gujarati films at fifteen and spent the 1950s playing goddesses - she was Parvati and Sita often enough that audiences greeted her as them - before the role that defined the rest of her life arrived in middle age.
From Deewaar onward she was Hindi cinema's mother, and specifically Amitabh Bachchan's: she played it in Deewaar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Suhaag, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar and more than a dozen others. She was eight years older than him. The typecasting was total and she was clear-eyed about it, saying the industry had found a use for her and she had taken it.
