Pran Mehra

Thirteen films, and the Chopra house is most of them - Waqt, Gumrah, Ittefaq, Deewaar.

Thirteen films here as editor, and they belong almost entirely to one family's production houses.

Dhool Ka Phool in 1959, Gumrah in 1963, Waqt in 1965, Hamraaz in 1967, Ittefaq in 1969, Dhund in 1973, Joshila in 1973, Deewaar in 1975, The Great Gambler in 1979, The Burning Train in 1980. Add Lal Patthar, 36 Ghante and Zameer and that is the list.

Two of those are worth stopping on for the cutting in particular. Ittefaq is a thriller with no songs at all, which in 1969 was close to unheard of, shot in under a month and running barely an hour and a half - a film with nowhere to hide a weak join. And Waqt is the film that invented the lost-and-found family plot that Hindi cinema then used for thirty years, which means holding three separated brothers in an audience's head for three hours.

Deewaar is the other one, and it is the one everybody has seen.

He is a different person from Pran, the actor, who has fifty films in this catalogue and is in none of these as an editor. The catalogue keeps them apart deliberately: a shared first name is close to no evidence, and matching on it once gave the editor forty of the actor's films.
