Rajinikanth
1950–
Shivaji Rao Gaekwad was a bus conductor in Bangalore before a film institute in Madras, and K. Balachander gave him his first parts as a villain. The persona that followed - the walk, the cigarette flip, the lines delivered to the back of the hall - made him the most popular actor in India outside Hindi cinema and arguably in it.
His Hindi films are a small part of the work: Andha Kanoon, Hum, Farishtay. The Tamil career is the career. He entered politics briefly in 2021 and withdrew on medical advice.
