Rakhee Gulzar

Indian actress (born 1947)

Bengali-born and one of the defining leading ladies of 1970s Hindi cinema. Sharmilee, in which she plays twin sisters of opposite temperament, is the film that made her a star. She moved later into character roles of unusual force, particularly mothers - Shakti (1982), Ram Lakhan (1989), Karan Arjun (1995) - playing them with none of the sentimentality the parts usually invite. Married to the lyricist and director Gulzar.

She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Tapasya (1976), beating her own nomination that year for Kabhi Kabhie, and took Best Supporting Actress twice more, for Daag (1973) and Ram Lakhan (1989), alongside two National Film Awards. The strangest line on her record is Shakti (1982), where she plays Amitabh Bachchan's mother while being five years younger than him - and is completely convincing, because she played those parts with a flintiness the role is almost never given.
