Ramesh Sippy
Indian film director (born 1947)
He was twenty-eight when he made Sholay, and had already directed Seeta Aur Geeta. He shot it over two and a half years in the boulder country around Ramanagara, spending twenty-one days on a single song, and released it to reviews that called it a dead ember.
Shaan, Shakti and Saagar followed, and then Buniyaad - a television serial about Partition that is held in nearly the same regard as the film. Nothing he made afterwards escaped the comparison, which is what happens to a director whose second feature becomes the most popular film his country has produced.
