Gopal Bedi, who acts as Ranjeet, had debuted the year before in 'Sawan Bhadon', but it was Kundan in Sharmilee that made his name. He spent the next two decades as one of Hindi cinema's most instantly recognisable villains, in a career of well over two hundred films.

The typecasting was total and it lasted twenty years: if a film of the 1970s or 80s needed a man to menace the heroine, he was very often the man they called, across something close to two hundred films - Laawaris, Namak Halaal, Amar Akbar Anthony, Dharmatma. He has been candid since about what playing it that many times did to how audiences treated him off screen. The craft in it was real: he gave those parts a relaxed, almost genial menace rather than shouting, which is why they are still watchable.
