Roshan
Composer of qawwalis and raga-based melodies; patriarch of the Roshan family · 1917–1967
Roshanlal Nagrath was born in Gujranwala, now in Pakistan, on 14 July 1917, and trained in Hindustani classical music before he joined the film industry. He became known for raga-based melodies and grand qawwalis; 'Na To Karvan Ki Talash Hai' from Barsaat Ki Raat (1960) is still named among the greatest film qawwalis ever recorded.
His score for Taj Mahal (1963), which includes 'Jo Wada Kiya Wo', won him the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, and Sahir Ludhianvi's lyrics won theirs. His son Rajesh Roshan, who has said the song still haunts him, went on to be a composer in his own right. Roshan died in Bombay on 16 November 1967. His sons are the actor-director Rakesh Roshan and Rajesh Roshan, and his grandson is the actor Hrithik Roshan.
