S. S. Vasan
1903–1969
S. S. Vasan founded Gemini Studios in Madras and made Chandralekha in 1948, which cost more than any Indian film had and was shot in Tamil and Hindi at once to earn it back. It worked.
He published the magazine Ananda Vikatan before the studio and ran both together. Gemini's Hindi output ran for decades after Chandralekha; the drum-dance sequence in it is still the thing people reach for when they want to show what 1940s Indian cinema could do.
