Samir Ganguly

Indian film director · 1936–

Born in Lucknow in 1936, the youngest of seven, Samir Ganguly came to Bombay in 1953 looking for work and was taken on at Filmistan as an assistant director at a hundred and fifty rupees a month. He learned the job as third assistant to Nasir Hussain on Tumsa Nahi Dekha (1957), and directed his own first film ten years after that. Shagird (1967) and Abhinetri (1970) came before Sharmilee (1971), which is the one still watched - largely for its score. He directed through to Pakhandee in 1983.

His career is a studio career rather than an authored one. He came up through Filmistan's assistant ranks, directed inside its house style, and made films that were meant to work rather than to be discussed - romance, a thriller turn, a strong score, a star. He directed for sixteen years and stopped in 1983. Sharmilee is the one that outlived its decade, and it did so largely on S. D. Burman's songs.
