Shakeel Badayuni
Indian writer (1916-1970)
He is on five films in this catalogue, and two of them are the same story told fifteen years apart.
Deedar, in 1951, is Dilip Kumar as a blind singer who destroys his own restored sight rather than watch the woman he loves marry the surgeon who cured him. Shakeel Badayuni wrote its songs.
In 1966 Manoj Kumar took Raj Khosla to a cinema that was running Deedar again, and the two of them came out and reworked it into Do Badan - and Shakeel Badayuni wrote the songs for that too. Bhari Duniya Mein, in Bhairavi; Raha Gardishon Mein, in Darbari Kanada, which is a serious raga for a film song to be carrying; Lo Aa Gayi Unki Yaad, which was nominated for the Filmfare. He was nominated for Naseeb Mein Jiske.
Both films are here, and so is the fact that the same poet was asked twice, fifteen years apart, to write the songs for one idea.
The other three are Aan, Bees Saal Baad and Grahasti.
He was an Urdu poet from Badaun who came to films through Naushad and stayed, won the Filmfare three years running in the early sixties, and died at forty-two.
