Shaukat Kaifi

1928–2019

Shaukat Kaifi was an Indian People's Theatre Association actress before she was a film one, and the stage remained the serious half of her work - she played Begum Jaan in Umrao Jaan and Ismat Chughtai's women on stage for decades.

Garam Hawa, Umrao Jaan, Haqeeqat, Bazaar, Salaam Bombay. Her memoir Yaad Ki Rahguzar is a first-hand account of the Progressive Writers' circle. She was married to Kaifi Azmi; Shabana Azmi is her daughter.
