Subodh Mukherjee

Indian film director and producer (1921-2005)

A central figure of the Filmistan studio era who did as much as anyone to establish the Hindi romantic comedy: Munimji (1955), Paying Guest (1957), Love Marriage (1959) and Junglee (1961), the last of which remade Shammi Kapoor's career. He produced Sharmilee under his own banner.

Junglee (1961) is the one that changed something. It took Shammi Kapoor, until then a middling romantic lead, and turned him into the industry's first rock-and-roll star - the yell of 'Yahoo!' comes from that film - and the template of the light, colour-saturated, song-driven romance it set was still being copied twenty years later. He produced in the studio manner: house writers, house composers, and a recognisable product.
