Suchitra Sen
1931–2014
Suchitra Sen was Bengali cinema's leading actress for twenty-five years and then disappeared completely - after 1978 she was not photographed in public again, refused the Dadasaheb Phalke Award rather than attend the ceremony, and lived in Calcutta for another thirty-five years without being seen.
Agni Pariksha, Saptapadi, Deep Jwele Jaai and fifty-odd more with Uttam Kumar, the pairing Bengal measures all others against. In Hindi she made Devdas, Mamta and Aandhi, where she plays a politician widely taken to be Indira Gandhi. She was born Roma Dasgupta; her daughter Moon Moon Sen and granddaughters Raima and Riya also act.
