Sulochana Latkar

1928–2023

Sulochana Latkar acted in some three hundred films across Marathi and Hindi, and for thirty years she was the mother - of Dev Anand, of Sunil Dutt, of Rajesh Khanna, of almost everyone - in a register that made the part dignified rather than tearful.

Sasurvas and Vahinichya Bangdya in Marathi; Aai in which she took the lead; and in Hindi Johny Mera Naam, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Jaani Dushman, Anari, Bhabhi and Talaash. She was given the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Maharashtra Bhushan in 2009. She worked as Sulochana, which is also the screen name of the silent-era star Ruby Myers, a generation earlier - the two are frequently confused, including in catalogue data.
