Sulochana (Ruby Myers)

1907–1983

Ruby Myers was a Baghdadi Jewish telephone operator in Poona when the silent cinema found her, and as Sulochana she became the highest-paid actor in India - she earned more than the Governor of Bombay and drove a Chevrolet to prove it.

Typist Girl, Wildcat of Bombay, Madhuri and Anarkali are her films. She learned Hindustani to survive the arrival of sound, and ended in small character parts - she appears in Haqeeqat, where indiancine.ma credits her as Ruby Mayer. She was given the Padma Shri in 1973. She is not Sulochana Latkar, the Marathi and Hindi character actress of the next generation, who also worked under the single name; Wikidata files a number of Latkar's credits against this entity, so no filmography is published here.
